John's Comments:
When I arrived at Bass Harbor Head, I followed the path along the left of the lighthouse. I was led to a stairway down the face of the cliff and offered this incredible view of the lighthouse and rocky ascent. Like all Acadia lighthouses, it is steeped in history. Samuel Adams Drake, New England author and historian, writes of the Bass Harbor Head Light in 1891 '...a squat little lighthouse, in white cassock and black cap, sits demurely looking off to sea.' Treat yourself to more than one path...venture right; you'll be rewarded with a panoramic display of the ocean.
