John's Comments:
Paying close attention to the stories of abundant wildlife in Glacier National Park, I kept one eye on the stands of western red cedar and hemlock behind me, the other fixed on the lens taking in the splendor of Lake MacDonald. The largest lake in the park, it fills a valley formed by glacial activity and serves as a mirror to the mountains that surround it. Captivated by its grandeur, my caution was soon forgotten until I was startled by a small voice "Are you done photographing?" To my surprise (and relief), the shadows brought forth not a black bear or an elk but a boy, fishing gear in tow. As I relinquished the dock, we swapped stories in the mild, damp of daybreak. A young hand on his mother's Idaho farm, he quickly tallied the number of hogs and sheep he tended daily. He told me he fished this lake often and I got the sense he was as ardent a fisherman as I am a photographer. That he already understood hard work merits an equal measure of adventure.
