John's Comments:
Invariably, whenever I visit Redwood National Park, I come away with a crick in my neck. These giants of the tree species-the tallest living specie on Earth-have a dizzying effect when you try to grasp the enormity of their height. They can reach over 350 feet and some date back over 2,000 years. Even as a photographer, I find it challenging to capture their surprising stature. Their scientific name Sequoia sempervirens strikes me as counter-intuitive to their common name 'redwoods'. Sequoia is from the Cherokee Indian chief Sequoyah and sempervirens is Latin meaning "always green".
